When an installer or platform dies, monitoring often dies with it, and a system nobody's watching can underproduce for years.
Monitoring going dark is more serious than losing a convenience. It means nobody knows if your system is working, and solar failures are silent. A dead panel doesn't beep. A failing inverter doesn't leak. The only signal is numbers nobody's reading.
Three common causes: your installer's proprietary platform shut down when they did (common with SunPower-era systems); your monitoring gateway lost its internet connection (a router change is the classic culprit); or the cellular data plan that came with your system expired.
Some manufacturers tie warranty eligibility to the system staying connected and monitored. A gateway that's been offline for months isn't just a blind spot, it can complicate future claims. Reconnecting isn't cosmetic; it's protective.
If the hardware is fine, restoring monitoring is often as simple as re-connecting the gateway to your network. If the original platform is gone entirely, a monitoring retrofit, a modern gateway added to your existing system, restores full visibility for a modest one-time cost. Either way, this is step one of our Orphan Rescue onboarding: before anything can be diagnosed, guaranteed, or claimed, the system has to be seen.
